The Aerospace Industries Association will continue to fight against sequestration, which took effect on March 1. - Competition is fierce for defense contracts, CEO says
As the Pentagon grapples with budget cuts, defense contractors are engaged in "fierce competition," said Linda Hudson, CEO of the U.S. subsidiary of BAE Systems. - Pentagon is reassessing military strategy, general says
Sequestration has forced military officials to reassess the Pentagon's defense strategy, according to Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "Recognizing longer-term uncertainty, I've also begun to reassess what our military strategy should be, as well as institutional reforms necessary to remain an effective fighting force," he wrote on the Pentagon's Facebook page. - Aerospace technologies to help Lockheed Martin mine the seabed
Technologies developed for aerospace and related applications are increasingly useful for undersea mining, a factor that helped a Lockheed Martin unit win a license to prospect for minerals in the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Mexico. UK Seabed Resources, a subsidiary of a British arm of Lockheed Martin, will be looking for nodules of copper, nickel, cobalt, manganese and rare-earth minerals on the seabed about 2.5 miles deep. The company plans to use "remotely operated or autonomous underwater vehicles, pumps, suction and riser pipes to extract the minerals." Defense News

- Senator proposes amendments to cut military biofuels
Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., introduced amendments to a government funding bill that would reduce funding for military biofuels. The two amendments would take away a total of $174 million from alternative-fuel programs. "I am confident that we can make more sensible cuts in spending than severely reducing the Army's operations and maintenance work," Toomey said in a statement. The Hill/E2 Wire blog
