  • Voluntary products to keep an eye on in 2013
    Sales of voluntary products are rising as more employers begin to offer voluntary employee benefits. In 2011 alone, voluntary benefits sales rose 4.5% compared with the year prior, according to Eastbridge Consulting Group. Voluntary products to watch in the coming year include hybrid long-term care insurance, life and disability coverage, hospital indemnity plans, and dental and vision insurance.     Wellness programs and incentives continue to be popular with businesses, but the success of wellness programs still depends on employee participation. Incentive Research Foundation's 2011 study showed that only 1 in 5 employees participate in wellness programs without incentives.   • States seek flexibility on Medicaid funds
    Governors meeting with President Barack Obama about avoiding automatic tax increases and spending cuts asked for more flexibility in their management of Medicaid and other federal-state programs. Delaware Gov. Jack Markell, a Democrat, said that his state would have to revisit its plan to expand Medicaid eligibility under the Affordable Care Act if the federal government reduces funding.   • Q3 sales of fixed annuities goes down, indexed annuities goes up
    Fixed-annuity sales fell to $16.6 billion in the third quarter, a 3.1% decline from the previous quarter and a 12.8% drop year-over-year, according to a Beacon Research report. Sales for the year are down 13.1%, to $50.61 billion, compared with $58.24 billion in 2011, according to the report. Despite this, both indexed and income annuity sales rose this year -- indexed annuity sales went up by 4.5% and income annuity sales went up by 8.9%.
