  News of the Day
  • Verizon boosts profit margin; FiOS results are stable
Verizon Communications, in its third-quarter financial report, says profit margins grew as it added 136,000 FiOS broadband customers and 119,000 FiOS TV subscribers -- about the same as in the prior quarter. Also, Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo said the telecom was "very close to launching" its video-streaming service with Redbox this quarter. On the wireless side, Verizon thrived on the growing number of iPhone customers running up data charges, and the company added 1.5 million contract subscribers -- its best total in four years. • Verizon is sticking with unlimited data on fiber, CTO says: Verizon Communications has no intention of moving to a tiered pricing model on its fiber-based broadband services, Chief Technology Officer Tony Melone said Wednesday at an industry conference. "Simplicity for our customers is in our best interests too. For the foreseeable future the technology will allow us [to offer unlimited plans]," Melone said, adding that Verizon would keep a close eye on how bandwidth consumption affects its costs. • Sprint moves to control Clearwire board
Sprint Nextel reportedly has grabbed majority control over Clearwire's board of directors with the purchase of Eagle River Holdings' 4.5% stake in the company in a deal that would enable Sprint to dominate the wireless broadband provider without having to acquire it. Softbank, which wants to acquire 70% of Sprint, likely wanted to nail down control over Clearwire's valuable spectrum assets. Also at Sprint, Fitch Ratings indicated that it might upgrade the carrier from its current B-plus status as a result of the Softbank deal. • AT&T wins FCC nod to deploy 2.3 GHz spectrum
The Federal Communications Commission signed off Wednesday on allowing AT&T to deploy 30 MHz of mostly unused spectrum for wireless and fixed-line bandwidth following an agreement the carrier reached with satellite radio provider Sirius XM over potential interference issues in the 2.3 GHz band. Of the total, AT&T will dedicate 10 MHz -- at least in the short-term -- to fixed-line bandwidth, with the remainder earmarked for 4G wireless services. • Zayo to acquire First Telecom Services for $110M in cash
Zayo Group has agreed to acquire First Telecom Services, which has 8,000 miles of fiber-optic routes in 11 states, for $110 million in cash. "First and foremost, FTS brings a strong and durable base of largely dark fiber revenue from a select group of strategic customers. Second, it secures Zayo's control over some critical and unique regional fiber routes," Zayo President and CEO Dan Caruso said in statement. • NPD: North American consumers aren't warming to smart TVs
Only about 20% of television sets shipped in North America are Internet-connected TVs, a penetration rate lagging behind Asia and Europe, according to NPD DisplaySearch. "North American households consume the highest levels of Internet video, averaging over 30GB per household every month (according to Cisco), yet they don't seem attracted to connected TVs. We find that North America leads by far in paid on-demand services, which tend to be tied to set-top boxes," said NPD's Paul Gray in a statement. • How Big Data can bring big bucks to the telecom community
Telecom companies need to start taking advantage of the reams of potentially profitable data at their fingertips by bolstering their analytic capabilities, according to Sprint's Von McConnell. While over-the-top providers are marching ahead in the world of data science, McConnell warns that telecom companies have been slow to embrace the real-time analytics that advertisers are willing to pay top dollar for -- and that puts them at risk of being left behind. • Industry facing bigger, but less frequent, DDoS attacks
Distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attacks are becoming fewer in number but larger in scale, experts say. Prolexic, a provider of DDoS mitigation tools, says that while the number of attacks has declined 14% since the second quarter, attacks with an average bandwidth of more than 20 Gbps are more frequent than ever, and the average attack bandwidth in the third quarter was up 230% compared with last year. • Alcatel exec: Don't put all your eggs in one access basket
Carriers should avoid committing to any one particular access technology and leave all options on the table for bringing broadband capacity to market, according to Dave Geary, president of Alcatel-Lucent's wireline division. He says it is "unrealistic" to think fiber-to-the-home can reach everyone. Speaking at a recent industry event, Geary said Alcatel-Lucent plans to leverage everything at its disposal -- "provided it gives availability and bandwidth" -- to bring access to the 75 million U.S. consumers who still lack broadband.
