  • Dermatologists play a vital role in caring for cancer patients
Dermatologists play a vital role in managing dermatologic toxicity and helping cancer patients overcome side effects of treatment, including problems affecting the skin, hair and nails, says dermatologist Beth McLellan, who spearheaded the Supportive Oncodermatology Clinic at New York University Langone Medical Center. Dermatologists should become more involved in oncology trials to study possible cutaneous complications and find ways to mitigate the effects of long-used treatments, such as radiation dermatitis, McLellan says. Dermatologists who can provide supportive oncodermatology services should contact area oncologists as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants in oncology practices, McLellan says. • Men may be more prone to squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the ear
Patients who underwent Mohs surgery for squamous cell carcinoma in situ of the ear were more likely to be men, and older patients are more likely to have larger lesions, according to a retrospective review of 173 cases. Recurrent tumors were bigger than primary tumors and needed more Mohs micrographic surgery layers for clearance. Healio (12/6) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Help patients form realistic expectations for surgical outcomes
Patients who have realistic expectations for the results of dermatologic surgery are more likely to be satisfied, and dermatologists can help patients zero in on what they want to achieve, says dermatologist Howard K. Steinman. The mnemonic AIDET can help, Steinman says: Acknowledge the patient, introduce yourself, tell the patient how long the procedure will take (duration), explain all steps of the procedure and thank the patient for his or her trust and patience.
