- U.S. considers deeper involvement in Syrian conflict
A string of rebel victories in Syria is leading the Obama administration to consider offering more support to the campaign to oust President Bashar al-Assad, U.S. officials say. The U.S. could begin directly providing equipment to opposition fighters or deploy intelligence agents to the region. Opponents of American intervention argue that it could cause the crisis to escalate into a broader conflict involving Turkey. The New York Times (tiered subscription model)

- U.S. drone successes trigger development race
A global arms race to develop drone technology is rapidly changing the nature of modern warfare, David Wood writes. The most effective use of drones has been by the U.S. in places such as Pakistan and Afghanistan, but the rest of the world is catching up: More than 50 nations now operate surveillance drones, and an increasing number of countries are fitting their drones with weapons. "This is a robotics revolution, but it's not just an American revolution -- everyone's involved, from Hezbollah to paparazzi," said Peter W. Singer of the Brookings Institution. The Huffington Post

The 2013 defense authorization bill is now before the Senate for consideration, after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., avoided a GOP filibuster of the bill. "We proceeded to the bill on a motion ... that way, those who want to filibuster have to come and actually debate it," said Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. The Hill/Floor Action blog

As many as 16,000 soldiers and 5,000 officers will have to be involuntarily separated from service as the Army recalibrates its ranks, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ray Odierno says. The separations will come as the force looks to decrease troop numbers by 80,000, a number that will increase further if sequestration cuts come into force. Defense News
