  • N.H. nuke facility to seal ASR-damaged areas if required
New Hampshire's Seabrook Nuclear Energy Plant is safe, despite having some non-critical areas plagued by alkali-silica reaction, say officials. The containment structure itself is fully intact and unaffected by ASR," said Alan Griffith, communications manager for Seabrook. However, NextEra Energy will seal the ASR-riddled concrete if required to do so by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. New Hampshire Public Radio (11/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • 15,000 y3 of concrete from Canadian civic center to be recycled
Crews recently completed the demolition of the Moose Jaw Civic Center in Saskatchewan, Canada, to make way for development plans, including retail space. The building was commonly known as the Crushed Can because of the inverted curve of its roof that was "supported by a series of two-inch cables suspended from 30-foot concrete A-frames forming the walls," writes Peter Kenter. Work on the demolition yielded 15,000 cubic yards of concrete that will be recycled. Journal of Commerce (Canada) (11/28) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • NYC's $5B Atlantic Yards: A paragon of modular construction?
When Forest City Ratner and Skanska USA break ground on the first of 15 modular structures for the $4.9 billion Atlantic Yards development next month, the event will mark a milestone in the history of modular construction in New York City. "With this project ... we are also building a new industry that has potential to become New York City’s newest export, a product and process that can transform how construction is done in this century," said William Flemming of Skanska USA Building. Over 60% of the project's modules will be assembled at the Brooklyn Navy Yard's Building 293. • Contour crafting: Sophistication in concrete applications

    Source: ExtremeTech
This piece discusses a new way to use concrete and three-dimensional printing technology to build homes and buildings. Behrokh Khoshnevis, of the University of Southern California, explains what contour crafting is, which he describes as "streamlining the process of construction" by using such processes as computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing in the actual process of building structures. • Anti-bullying bills could hurt construction industry
Sexual harassment and bullying in the workplace could become easier to prove now that laws are being proposed in more than 20 states to widen the scope of liability. However, for employers, particularly in the construction industry, such legislation "opens the door for juries to deal with sympathetic plaintiffs in [cases] no employer would ever conceive of as bullying. The approach, though well intentioned, is not well thought out," says Champe McCulloch, president of the Maryland chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America.
