- T-Mobile posts improved results as MetroPCS merger report emerges
T-Mobile USA reported better-than-expected first-quarter results today, and a published report said the Deutsche Telekom unit was discussing a merger with prepaid carrier MetroPCS Communications. T-Mobile's operating income grew 7.2% from a year earlier, and in losing 248,000 contract customers, the carrier improved significantly from the previous quarter and the year-earlier quarter. At International CTIA WIRELESS®, Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray defended the carrier's network performance even as it is moving to upgrade to Long-Term Evolution technology. Reuters

- Sprint's busy day: LTE update, mobile hot spot, HTC Evo 4G
Sprint Nextel's deployment of its Long-Term Evolution
network may take some time, but the infrastructure might prove stronger than that of other carriers because of upgrades to Sprint's 3G network, Senior Vice President Bob Azzi said Wednesday at International CTIA Wireless®. In line with its fragmented network, Sprint unveiled the Tri-Fi Hotspot, which will share broadband connections on CDMA, WiMAX and LTE networks. In Wi-Fi, Sprint said it had introduced an "intelligent client" to its networks that's aimed at making it easier for subscribers to find and recall hot spots. Sprint also said its HTC Evo 4G LTE phone would hit the market May 18 for $200. Computerworld/IDG News Service

- Facebook concedes that move to mobile could hurt profits
Facebook acknowledges that even as its mobile site has grown to 488 million users -- more than half of its total population -- the social network may not realize a corresponding rise in advertising income because of the low number of mobile ads. In an amended filing for its stock offering, Facebook warned that the situation "may negatively affect" its bottom line. Also, Facebook said it would launch an App Center to help users discover games and other applications. Reuters

- New report finds that wireless tech is revolutionizing industries
and communities
In a report commissioned by CTIA and released today, BSR tracks the opportunities and challenges that wireless technology faces in health care, finance, education and community empowerment. The report, "Social Impacts of Wireless Technology," found three themes that affect these areas: the ubiquity of wireless devices in the world, which now number almost 6 billion; remote capability, which enables socially beneficial tools, applications and services to reach people and places that were extremely difficult to reach before; and the closing of information gaps, which means the technology can collect and provide information in new and innovative ways. As 4G networks are launched across the U.S., powerful applications are being developed that harness the power of smartphones or tablet computers and are revolutionizing many parts of society.
