  • Nielsen error results in undercount
    Nielsen is blaming long URLs used by social networks -- sometimes as long as 2,000 characters -- for an error that led to an undercount of the important "time spent" metric for the past three months. While media buyers don't use Nielsen data as online ad-buying currency, its metrics are considered an important benchmark for planning purposes.   • Pew finds Hispanics are checking in more often than other users
    One in 10 Hispanics Web users regularly check in with location-based services, compared with 5% of online blacks and 3% of whites, according to a study by the Pew Research Center. The report also showed 7% of smartphone users are connecting to geo-social services, and two times as many men (6%) as women (3%) are checking in.   • FTC names chief technologist, executive director
    The Federal Trade Commission announced a pair of key hires. Princeton computer science professor Edward Felten will serve as the commission's first chief technologist.
