  • Number without dental benefits in Colo. grew 17% from 2009 to 2011
    Nearly 53% of Colorado's Latino population, 39.1% of whites and 29.9% of African-Americans lack dental insurance, and close to 61% of Coloradans older than 65 lack coverage, according to a study by the Colorado Trust. The number of children with dental coverage rose by 66,300, but fewer children visited the dentist. The survey also found lacked dental insurance. Experts are urging the state to include adult dental care as an essential benefit in plans offered on the state's health insurance exchange.   • Drinking coffee may prevent oral cancer
    Consumption of more than four cups of coffee daily was associated with a 49% decline in the risk of dying from oral or pharyngeal cancer, according to a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology. Researchers said that drinking at least two cups of decaffeinated coffee had an effect as well, though it was smaller.   • NADP survey reports enrollment in commercial dental benefits increased in 2011
    At year-end 2011, enrollment in commercial dental benefits increased while publicly funded programs declined according to the 2012 NADP/DDPA Joint Dental Benefits Report: Enrollment, released in August. According to the report, more than 176 million Americans, 57% of the population, were covered at year‐end 2011 by some form of dental benefit through employer‐sponsored group plans or other group or individual plans. For the first time, this report includes findings on small-group and individual benefits. The report is available for purchase via the Report Vault page of the NADP website.
