Chicago area high schools are working to build on the successes Title IX brought about for females in sports and extend them into the subjects of science, technology, engineering and math. Males continue to outperform females in math and science, and educators are looking to close the gap by providing more female role models in the subject areas and encouraging participation in programs like GEMS, Girls in Engineering, Math and Science, from elementary school onward. - Solid math skills are essential for students interested in aviation
Anyone interested in a career in aviation maintenance should take as much math as possible, says Jon Byrd, director of the aviation program at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. "It's all about math," Byrd told members of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce Education and Workforce. Students enrolled in a new career and technical academy in New Hartford, N.Y., are learning about math and science through hand-on activities, such as building and launching air-powered rockets. "We have research that says the biggest reason kids don't do well in school is lack of engagement," said David Stayton, the school's principal of career and technical education.
