- Bus drivers in Fla. county draw criticism
Public-transit bus drivers in Florida's Broward County are the subject of numerous complaints alleging dangerous and aggressive driving, with one accident claim recently ending with a $73,005 settlement. The driver in that accident had been involved in 10 collisions with other drivers and had his license suspended five times during 12 years, according to his personnel file. - Conn. shooting spurs discussion of expanded workers' comp benefits
The school shooting in Newtown, Conn., may prompt state lawmakers to consider legislation to expand workers' compensation benefits by including more mental-health cases, according to this article. "There is very limited ability for a police officer and a firefighter to receive psychological counseling" under the workers' comp system, said John Mastropietro, chairman of the Connecticut Workers' Compensation Commission. "Most, if not everyone, agrees that the circumstances which existed in the Newtown tragedy do not meet the requirements of the statute for even the psychological counseling." The Affordable Care Act led to health insurers giving $1.1 billion in customer rebates in 2011 under the medical loss ratio provision, Sarah Kliff writes. In addition, state regulators lowered or rejected more than 900 filings for rate increases in 2010, she writes. However, Aon Hewitt says the law's added requirements for benefits have played a part in increasing some premiums, particularly in the individual market, although large employers saw only a minor change. - U. of Iowa plans to fight charges filed by ex-professor in Jordan
Former University of Iowa professor Malik Juweid, who now lives in Jordan, has filed criminal charges in that country against two administrators at the university. Juweid says then-medical school dean Paul Rothman and associate dean Lois Geist made death threats against him. A judge in a civil lawsuit that Juweid filed previously against university officials mentioned harassing behavior by Juweid and a "history of emotional challenges."
