  • High-fat meals raise insulin needs, glucose levels in type 1 diabetes
    Type 1 diabetes patients who ate a high-fat meal required more insulin units but still had higher postprandial glucose levels than those who ate a low-fat meal, a study found. "The evidence from this study that dietary fat can cause postprandial hyperglycemia in some individuals with type 1 diabetes highlights the limitations of the current carbohydrate-based approach to bolus dose calculation that is widely used in intensive diabetes management," researchers wrote in Diabetes Care.   • Medical home models cut health care costs, study finds
    A study by the HealthPartners Research Foundation showed that patient-centered medical homes may help reduce total and outpatient care costs for individuals with complex conditions. Researchers said PCMHs helped curb overall costs by $446 per patient in 2005 and by $184 in 2009, while outpatient expenses were lowered by $241 per patient in 2005 and $54 in 2009.   • States show improvements in EHR adoption
    Data from the 2012 Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT annual meeting revealed that Maine, Delaware and Massachusetts were among the states with the highest percentages of providers receiving incentives for adopting EHR systems.
