- Senators to probe Army PTSD diagnosis cases
Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee Chairman Patty Murray, D-Wash., has launched an investigation into the Army's handling of treatment for service personnel with post-traumatic stress disorder. The Army has been investigating claims that PTSD diagnoses were reversed in service members being considered for medical retirement because of cost concerns, and Murray said she wanted to ensure an "in-depth" probe that resulted in every individual receiving the treatment he or she needs. - Departing AMEDD head urges continued advancement
The Army should continue to promote advances in Army medicine, such as the requirement that flight medics go through more rigorous paramedic certification, says Maj. Gen. David Rubenstein, departing commander of the Army Medical Department Center and School. He says incorporating lessons learned from field operations and combat in Iraq and Afghanistan and enhanced training for medical personnel are among the areas where the Army should keep seeking innovation. - DOD, VA boost joint iEHR initiative with data dictionary feature
The Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs are preparing to employ the Health Data Dictionary from 3M as a key data layer of their joint iEHR and make it accessible to the public through the Open Source Electronic Health Record Agent. "We hope that, by establishing standards for data and interfaces, making them publicly available, executing through the open source, and buying packages that meet the standards, we will encourage the community to use those standards more broadly than just the iEHR," VA CIO Roger Baker wrote in response to an inquiry from Government Health IT. - Guidelines call for restrictive approach to blood transfusions
Transfusions of red blood cells should be given on a restrictive basis to stable patients, according to new guidelines published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The guidelines from the American Association of Blood Banks include a "weak" recommendation that symptoms be considered along with hemoglobin levels in making transfusion decisions in hospitalized patients with pre-existing cardiovascular disease.
