  • Older breast cancer survivors are more prone to additional cancer
    Researchers looked at data on 110,440 breast cancer survivors in the U.S. and found that older women were more likely to develop additional primary cancers in the long term than those 64 and younger. Female breast cancer survivors ages 70 to 79 faced the greatest risk of multiple primary malignancy. The findings were presented at an International Society of Geriatric Oncology meeting.   • Curbing diabetes complications would have a major economic impact
    Data from one of three studies commissioned by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation revealed reducing end-stage renal disease by 50% may help Medicare save up to $475 million for type 1 diabetes and $14 billion for type 2 diabetes after 10 years. In another study, researchers found new glucose-lowering methods may lead to Medicare savings of up to $810 million for type 1 and $45 billion for type 2 diabetes in 10 years. Reducing the severity of type 1 and type 2 diabetes by just 10% and 5%, respectively, could also help save billions in medical costs, researchers said in the third study.   • Study finds widespread heart disease risks among U.S. adults
    U.S. adults, both male and female, face at least a 55% overall risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association and presented at the American Heart Association meeting. The findings, based on an analysis of data from five studies conducted between 1964 and 2008, highlight "the large public health burden and opportunities for prevention of total [cardiovascular disease]."   • Survey shows how patients use Web for health care
    A Manhattan Research survey revealed 54% of respondents turn to the Internet to determine the services they may need and the right health care personnel to provide them. Data also showed 79% of patients diagnosed with chronic disease in the past three months went online for their health care decisions, compared with 53% of patients diagnosed a year earlier.
