  • Intensive glucose control offers no benefit after kidney transplant
Researchers found statistically similar rates of delayed graft function following kidney transplant in diabetes patients receiving intensive glucose control and a control group. The study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism also found a blood glucose target of less than 180 mg/dL was associated with a lower risk of organ rejection than targets of 70-110 mg/dL, suggesting tight glycemic control may offer no help immediately after the procedure. • AABB posts final update to XMRV table
The AABB Emerging Infectious Diseases, or EID, subcommittee of the Transfusion Transmitted Diseases, or TTD, committee has updated the table "Published Studies on XMRV and pMLV Findings in Human Diseases and the General Population." The table now includes two recent publications: "A Multicenter Blinded Analysis Indicates No Association Between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis and Either [XMRV] or Polytropic Murine Leukemia Virus" published in "mBio" by Harvey J. Alter, W. Ian Lipkin and colleagues; and "In-Depth Investigation of Archival and Prospectively Collected Samples Reveals No Evidence for XMRV Infection in Prostate Cancer" published in "PLOS One" by Deanna Lee, Anatoly Urisman, Robert H. Silverman and colleagues. These studies -- published by the same authors who previously found potential disease associations -- conclusively demonstrate that there is no link between XMRV, and related viruses, and human disease. Because it has been proven that XMRV is not a human pathogen, and therefore is not a threat to blood safety, this will be the last update to the table. Input may be provided to the committee writing group via e-mail. LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
