  • High court allows revival of university's challenge to health law
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Liberty University's lawsuit challenging the Affordable Care Act, which the school says forces it to subsidize contraception and abortions, will be heard again in a federal appellate court. The ruling could herald the case's return to the Supreme Court next year, according to Liberty Counsel, which represents Liberty University. "Congress exceeded its power by forcing every employer to provide federally mandated insurance," Liberty Counsel lawyer Mathew Staver said. Recruiting & Retention
  • Dunkin' looks for the sweet spot in retaining talent
Dunkin' Brands' HR chief, Ginger Gregory, says a successful talent-retention initiative during her tenure has been the implementation of a "stay interview process," where executives are asked blunt questions about whether anything would cause them to leave the company. The company had relied solely on exit interviews to learn about its talent, which was ineffective because information about top executives was coming too late to help with retention, Gregory says. • Put poor performers back on the right track
Research shows managers often spend one day a week focused on underperforming employees, but that time suck can be eliminated through immediate corrective action instead of waiting until a performance review, says Paul McDonald, senior executive director at Robert Half. Once the employee is given appropriate feedback and improvements are made, recognize it to "increase the chances that the improvement will continue," he says. When rolling out a training initiative, make sure employees understand how it will help them advance their careers and contribute to the company's success, writes Mike Ryan of Madison Performance Group. Also, any training effort should feature a "stair-cased" reward system in which employees are given clear goals that reset once they're reached to reflect higher expectations, Ryan writes. Benefits & Compensation
  • Grocery owner to hand over store to employees
Retiring grocer Joe Lueken is transferring ownership of his store to his employees through an employee-stock program rather than sell to a large independent chain. "My employees are largely responsible for any success I've had, and they deserve to get some of the benefits of that," Lueken says. Employees will not be required to pay anything for their shares of the company. Star Tribune (Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn.) (11/23) LinkedInFacebookTwitterGoogle+Email this Story

  • Intentions can add context to your 2013 goals
Smart bosses try to communicate their intentions, not just broad goals, argues Dana Theus. Sharing intentions lets workers use their judgment to adapt to rapidly changing situations. "Intentions are specifically designed to include the information necessary -- including a broader picture of success -- enabling you to be flexible, creative and innovative when reality throws you a curveball," Theus writes.
