  • Texas considers regulation of dental management firms
A Texas bill would clarify the definition of a dental services organization, require the firms to register with the State Board of Dental Examiners and prohibit DSOs from influencing treatment decisions made by dentists. The bill would also subject DSOs to oversight and regulation by the Board of Dental Examiners; however, DSO supporters say the new measures are not needed. • Tooth decay rates hold steady where midlevel providers practice
Allowing specially trained midlevel providers to provide dental services does not influence rates of dental decay, according to a review of 18 studies in five locations where dental therapists provide care. The study, published in the Journal of the American Dental Association, found that more extractions and fillings were performed in populations served by dental therapists, but overall levels of dental decay and disparities in oral health were unchanged. • Employers weigh health insurance options
Employers must decide whether to continue offering health insurance to their employees or pay a penalty and have workers find their own coverage through exchanges. The Affordable Care Act requires employers with 50 or more employees to offer health insurance for full-time workers beginning in 2014. Patient care is shifting from fee-for-service to a value-based model.
By 2018, 50% of healthcare payments will be based on healthy outcomes rather than services provided. Those navigating the transition need to consider the different viewpoints of payers, providers as well as today's empowered consumer.

  • Poor oral health has a high economic and social cost
Studies have shown that people with misaligned, missing or discolored teeth may have more difficulty finding a job and may be judged as untrustworthy or less intelligent than their peers with straight, healthy teeth. Nearly half of Americans do not have dental insurance, HHS data show, and few dentists are willing to take patients with Medicaid. Some advocates propose allowing specially trained dental hygienists to provide dental services, but the ADA has opposed the proposals.
