- UP's Schmid honored by AAR for environmental excellence
Union Pacific Railroad Director of Environmental Affairs Lanny Schmid was awarded the Association of American Railroads 2012 Professional Environmental Excellence Award on Tuesday. Over the past 27 years, Schmid has worked with agencies at federal and state levels, as well as communities, to find solutions to environmental concerns. AAR said he "works tirelessly to identify environmental trends and initiatives to bring about optimal solutions for both his company and the communities through which it operates." - CP appoints 3 new members of senior operations group
Canadian Pacific is reorganizing its senior operations division with the appointments of Doug McFarlane, Guido De Ciccio and Scott MacDonald. McFarlane was named senior vice president of its U.S. unit, De Ciccio senior vice president of the Canadian division and MacDonald senior vice president of operations. "I expect Doug's and Guido's teams to get closer to the customer with Scott's team providing them with analytics, policy and transportation support," said CP CEO Hunter Harrison. - Wash. DOT enlists help from engineering firm for rail projects
The Washington State Department of Transportation recently awarded a three-year partnership contract to Jacobs Engineering Group for the state's rail development plans. A total of 21 freight rail projects are included under the state's program, according to the agency. "We are delighted to receive this award, and look forward to continuing our support of WSDOT in the long-term delivery of its capital rail projects," said Kevin McMahon, vice president of Jacobs Group. - UP advises safety precautions at rail crossings in Minn.
Union Pacific hosted a train-safety awareness ride in Albert Lea, Minn., to educate the public on the dangers of not obeying traffic signals at railroad crossings.
