Hostess Brands is telling striking union employees that failure to reach an agreement could put the company out of business. "If the strikes do not end soon, we will move to liquidate the company," said a spokesman. "And we're talking about a matter of days, not weeks." Cargill has introduced a mint chewing gum sweetened with a combination of stevia extract and Zerose erythritol. The company hopes the product will appeal to consumers who are diet-conscious or seeking natural ingredients. - Van Coillie taps Callebaut program for sustainable cocoa
Barry Callebaut's Quality Partner Programme, which supports sustainable cocoa production, is now the supplier of cocoa beans for praline-maker Van Coillie. - "Unwrap the Facts" counters sugar lobby claims
The Coalition for Sugar Reform has launched "Unwrap the Facts," a campaign aimed at countering claims from the sugar industry. "While they continue to falsely claim that the sugar program operates at no cost, the fact is, the wasteful sugar program is a sweet deal for sugar growers, but it costs American consumers and businesses $3.5 billion a year and puts 600,000 U.S. sugar-using industry jobs in jeopardy," said Larry Graham, NCA president and chairman of the Coalition for Sugar Reform. - Tangerine to shutter smallest factory
In a move to boost efficiency, U.K. confectioner Tangerine Confectionery said it would close its smallest factory, in Poole, Dorset, which employs about 75 people. "With increasingly tough market conditions, Tangerine Confectionery needs to ensure it runs efficiently and this has resulted in the decision to move production to our other sites," said CEO Graham Hunter.
