- Sears reports mixed third-quarter results
Appliance sales performed well during the third quarter but did not bring in enough to cover decreases in other categories that resulted in a loss of $156 million for the period, Sears Holdings Corp. reports. - More Comet stores set to close their doors
Deloitte administrators have announced the closure of an additional 125 Comet stores. There has been some interest from buyers in the British electronics chain, but without a firm offer in hand administrators indicated the remaining stores will only stay open long enough to clear existing inventory. - U.S. welcomes foreign tech entrepreneurs, official says
The federal government is working to encourage foreign-born high-tech entrepreneurs to come to the U.S. and start businesses, said Alejandro Mayorkas, director of the Citizenship and Immigration Service. The agency has implemented new training to help adjudicators identify visa applicants who are qualified to start or work for innovative technology and engineering firms, he said. - FSI survey finds most advisers think "fiscal cliff" will be avoided
Nearly 80% of financial advisers polled by the Financial Services Institute expect a last-minute compromise from Congress to head off the "fiscal cliff." The deal probably would include limits to tax deductions and higher marginal tax rates for wealthy Americans, 72% of advisers say. "Our independent financial advisor members have a unique vantage point on these issues as they work closely with Main Street American investors on a daily basis. While they recognize the need for compromise and reforms in order to make our country financially sound, they also see how many of these significant changes will impact their clients' ability to save for retirement, pay for their children's education or care for aging parents," said FSI President and CEO Dale Brown.
