- AT&T advances M2M technology with push into mainstream apps
AT&T is among a handful of companies taking machine-to-machine communications beyond its primary early-stage applications in fleet management. AT&T Vice President Chris Hill says the carrier recognizes that M2M networking has become increasingly mainstream as its use has become more sophisticated. - AT&T CEO forecasts the rise of data-only smartphone plans
The chief executive of AT&T says that within the next two years, companies will offer wireless plans that exclude voice services, bundling them instead -- along with text messaging -- under a data-only package. "I just think that's inevitable," said Randall Stephenson, who says he agrees with some analysts who say data-only services are a logical next step for forward-thinking companies as the number of mobile-phone calls made by consumers continues to drop. AT&T says it will offer a low-cost, eco-friendly 4G alternative to its Android-powered Galaxy S III handset this month as it seeks to draw more consumers who are not prepared to drop hundreds of dollars on a smartphone. Qualcomm Atheros is putting in another bid to compete against Apple and others for primacy in the digital home with the release of Java-based streaming media software based on DLNA standards.
