  • Philadelphia casino applicants to undergo background checks
    Officials of companies seeking to win Philadelphia's second casino license will soon undergo background checks as part of the application process. "We're really looking just to make sure that things are in actuality as things are presented by the applicant," said R. Douglas Sherman, chief counsel of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board. The board has identified 54 people linked to the applicants who will face financial checks and background reviews.   • IGT partners with Irish gaming company for mobile games
    International Game Technology has entered into a deal with Paddy Power to provide mobile games to the Irish sportsbook operator.   • Developer is driven to build Georgia gambling resort despite setback
    Dan O'Leary, a developer who hopes to build the first gambling complex in Georgia, said he is not giving up on the project, though he did not extend the contract to buy the land for it. "When you look at all the good this could bring and the mindset of voters, it seems like a no-brainer. And for that reason we will not give up," O'Leary said.   • Discussions about smoking ban in casinos continue
    The debate on whether implementing a nonsmoking policy in casinos affects revenues continues among casino officials, gaming industry analysts and gamblers. Dennis M. Farrell Jr., managing director of gaming, lodging and leisure research at Wells Fargo Securities L.L.C., says smoking regulations affect casino revenues. "Gaming markets that have initiated a full smoking ban have seen gaming revenues decline by at least 15 percent, which in turn has contributed to 20 to 25 percent cash-flow declines at the gaming facilities," Farrell said.     Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who had been working with Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., to pass federal legislation on Internet poker this year, said time to pass the bill has run out.
