ADA Scientific Sessions
  • Educators emphasize efforts to prevent and manage diabetes
Strategies to prevent the growing incidence of diabetes were the focus of lectures on Saturday by Ann L. Albright, Ph.D., RD, who received this year's Outstanding Educator in Diabetes Award, and Lurelean B. Gaines, RN, MSN, ADA president, health care and education. Gaines highlighted the benefits of volunteer work for the ADA, emphasizing that the organization offers a place for anyone who wants to make a difference. Albright talked about the challenges of addressing diabetes when as many as one-fifth of Americans could have the disease by 2025 and discussed the CDC's efforts to create a National Diabetes Prevention Program. • Researchers outline emerging therapies for type 2 diabetes
Four researchers discussed new therapeutic targets for type 2 diabetes at a Saturday symposium. Dr. John L. Leahy focused on beta cell pathways, noting that free fatty acid receptor 1 is one of the most promising targets. Dr. Abd A. Tahrani discussed the importance of treating obesity as a way to target insulin resistance and described other approaches such as enhancing receptor activity and modulating signaling downstream from the receptor. Reducing inflammation in adipose tissue and skeletal muscle is another approach, according to Dr. Robert R. Henry, and Dr. Bernard Zinman discussed the absorption and excretion of glucose.
