  • "Time is running out" on defense cuts, Blakey says
If Republicans and Democrats are waiting to see which side will blink on sequestration cuts to defense, the chance for a true solution is getting slimmer, writes Marion Blakey, president and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association. "[T]ime is running out," she writes, because companies are making decisions now based on the expectation that cuts will take place. "Any post-election fix will come too late to undo damage already done," Blakey writes. • Companies don't have to send 60-day layoff notices, DOL says
In a move critics charge as politically motivated, the Department of Labor has told defense companies preparing for possible sequestration that they don't have to issue notices normally required during large layoffs. House Armed Services Chairman Buck McKeon, R-Calif., says the Labor Department isn't legally allowed to make such guidance, which would prevent companies from issuing notices just prior to the November elections. Aerospace Industries Association Vice President Cord Sterling says AIA is having its legal counsel study the matter. AOL Defense (7/30) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • GOP lawmakers want Obama to take action on sequestration
Republican lawmakers are criticizing President Barack Obama over possible sequestration defense cuts and the expiration of tax cuts, calling for action on both. "No matter who or what was responsible, the president of the United States is commander-in-chief. He's the only one," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. The White House counters that sequestration was put into place by lawmakers of both parties as a deficit-cutting measure and that Congress could halt the cuts by raising taxes on higher-income earners. • NOAA weather satellites are a critical need, Blakey says
Without full funding for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather satellites, the nation is at risk during severe weather -- times when early warnings save lives, writes Marion Blakey, president and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association. "We can't let sequestration take weather forecasting back to the 1960s," she writes. "NOAA satellite systems are saving lives and money at a time when our weather is becoming more and more volatile."
