    Data on 765 patients showed that those with metabolic syndrome and fatty liver had higher diabetes rates than did those with metabolic syndrome alone, suggesting that fatty liver may increase the risk of diabetes onset in patients with metabolic syndrome.   • ACOG: Obese women can safely gain less weight during pregnancy
    Gaining less than the recommended amount of weight during singleton pregnancy does not pose adverse effects in overweight or obese women, provided that the fetus is growing appropriately, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said. The group also urged these patients to continue with nutritional counseling and exercise and to undergo height and weight assessment during pregnancy.   • FDA approves wider use of flu drug oseltamivir
    The FDA expanded the approved uses of Roche Holding's flu treatment Tamiflu, or oseltamivir, to include the treatment of children ages 2 weeks to 1 year who have shown symptoms of flu for no longer than two days.   • Short bowel syndrome drug wins FDA clearance
    NPS Pharmaceuticals obtained FDA approval for Gattex, or teduglutide, as a treatment for short bowel syndrome, but the agency also asked the firm to conduct a study on the potential side effects of the drug. Gattex may raise a person's risk for cancer, intestinal blockages and polyps, the FDA said. NPS is expected to market the drug in March.     The 2013 Call for Nominations is open now through Jan. 26, 2013. AANP and ACNP members in good standing for the 12 months prior to Nov. 26, 2012 (date that nominations opened) are eligible to submit their name for consideration in the 2013 election. Take a few minutes now to review the positions available for election in 2013 and think about how you might be able to join with others in charting the direction for the new AANP. The AANP Nominations Committee released the 2013 Call for Nominations on Nov. 26. The Call closes on January 26, 2013. The following positions will be on the ballot in 2013: Board of Directors -- Executive Committee -- Treasurer, and Regional Directors for Regions 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11. State Representative positions for election in 2013 are: Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York (N), New York (S), North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.
