Enrollment in the undergraduate engineering programs at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville have grown by around 10% in the past year. School officials say the lure of high-paying jobs is driving some of the growth, but they acknowledged that the number of students interested in pursuing these fields and who have demonstrated the ability to succeed is still limited. - Proposals are aimed at cutting costs of higher education
Special taxes and a better use of funding were among the proposals made by professors to stem the growing costs of higher education. At a forum organized by the Campaign for the Future of Higher Education, two professors proposed enacting small taxes -- one an income surcharge and another a tax on some financial transactions -- to funnel money to higher education.
