- Obama warns of harm to economy if sequester takes effect
President Barack Obama said thousands of jobs and the U.S. economy will be put in danger if the budget sequester takes effect March 1, imposing $85 billion of spending cuts. He appealed to Republican lawmakers to back a debt-reduction plan that relies on a combination of revenues from eliminating tax breaks for the wealthy and a spending reduction. Republicans said Obama was merely trying to shift the blame for the sequester. USA Today

- Index shows a slip in homebuilders' confidence
U.S. homebuilders have become less optimistic this month, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index. "This is partly due to ongoing uncertainties about job growth and consumer access to mortgage credit," NAHB Chairman Rick Judson said. "But it's also a reflection of the fact that builders are now confronting rising costs for building materials and, in some markets, limited availability of labor and lots as demand for new homes strengthens." - Investors see potential in bad loans, experts say
Nonperforming-loan securitizations are a hot commodity as investors seek opportunities for profit when the loans are eventually resolved or liquidated. The short-term nature of the investment also is attractive. "Investors are interested in buying NPL securitizations because the senior bond has tremendous credit enhancement and it's a fairly short-term investment providing more yield," said Eric Burner of Hunton & Williams. - Small companies utilize JOBS Act accounting provisions
Small companies planning an initial public offering are taking advantage of some -- but not all -- relaxed accounting provisions in the Jumpstart Our Business Startups Act, according to Ernst & Young. All emerging-growth companies that filed IPO documents last year used the JOBS Act to opt out of a requirement that an outside auditor weigh in every year on whether internal controls are effective. However, only 31% of eligible companies took advantage of a provision that lets them disclose less financial data. The Wall Street Journal
