- Cloud deployments may spur an increase in service alliances
Businesses' accelerated demand for end-to-end cloud solutions is outpacing the ability of individual providers to respond, which will force service providers to join together, according to a report. "The fact these companies are pursuing partnerships does not indicate a problem with their service. In many cases they're getting ahead of future customer demands. It's really a normal evolution of the market," says Amy Larsen DeCarlo of Current Analysis, which produced the report. Network World

- PC sales slipped in Q4, Gartner says
A 4.3% decrease in PC sales in the fourth quarter can be blamed on increasing demand for tablets and smartphones and the failure of Windows 8 to ignite PC sales, Gartner says. "Tablets have dramatically changed the device landscape for PCs, not so much by 'cannibalizing' PC sales, but by causing PC users to shift consumption to tablets rather than replacing older PCs," Gartner's Mikako Kitagawa says. - Certifications are planned for telecom network services
Network-services providers are planning cloud-computing certifications for resellers and partners in the telecom sector. "I would be extraordinarily leery of a carrier delivering [an] IaaS offering that did not have two basic elements -- a technical standard that must be met by the [partners] offering and delivering it, and, two, transparency," MSPAlliance CEO Charles Weaver has said. - Oracle issues Java updates to fix security risks
Oracle has released two security patches for Java 7 that aim to fix a vulnerability that U.S. officials said put 100 million PCs and data at risk. More patches are planned for release Tuesday. "Oracle recommends that this security alert be applied as soon as possible because these issues may be exploited 'in the wild' and some exploits are available in various hacking tools," Oracle's Eric Maurice wrote in a blog post.
