- RIM's Q2 surprise: BlackBerry outperforms estimates
Research In Motion got some good news to report on Thursday, saying it sold 500,000 more BlackBerry smartphones than analysts had expected in the second quarter, largely due to the popularity of the devices in emerging markets. RIM posted a smaller loss than predicted, and cash on hand improved. "Those numbers are very, very positive. RIM has taken a step up the ladder, and they can see where they're going," said Vic Alboini, chairman of investment firm Jaguar Financial. Reuters

- Smaller carriers want FCC to learn from auctions past
The Competitive Carriers Association urged federal regulators to learn from the past in setting rules for the upcoming incentive spectrum auction, pointing in particular to a 2008 sell-off of 700MHz frequencies. "The 700MHz auction was a disaster," said Patrick Riordan, CEO of the rural Wisconsin carrier Cellcom. Members of the CCA told the Federal Communications Commission it needs to establish rules that give smaller carriers a realistic shot at the spectrum. CNET
