- Intel moves into security with McAfee purchase
Intel forged a deal to acquire McAfee for $7.68 billion and will integrate the company's security technology into its chips for computers, smartphones and consumer electronics. However, some analysts said the expenditure seemed excessive given the limited apparent synergies. "Eventually the software features will get embedded in the hardware," said analyst Ashok Kumar of Rodman & Renshaw. "So maybe this is an expensive way for Intel to acquire domain expertise." Engage, a digital firm that works on Republican political campaigns, is trying to take its Facebook-based campaigns to a new level by adding in social games and "Foursquare-style" engagement to boost virtual and real-world involvement. Under Engage's Multiply tool, campaigns can provide users with prize points and badges as rewards for those who go door-to-door, obtain donations and help get out the vote, among other campaign activities. - Ace Hotel gets a cameo in short film series
New York's Ace Hotel appears in three short films produced as a result of a screeenwriting contest held in partnership with film production social network Massify and independent producer Killer Films. The films will be available to Ace guests via their custom in-room entertainment network, and they may also enjoy some visibility on the film festival circuit. - First national Groupon deal overwhelms servers
Groupon's first national deal debuted Thursday, offering users of the group-buying site $50 worth of Gap clothing for $25. The response far exceeded the company's expectations, bogging down its servers at points throughout the day, as users snapped up one Gap Groupon every 10 seconds. By midday, the site was on track to sell 700,000 by the end of the day, reaping a reward of about $17.5 million. TechCrunch

- Google's tablet is said to be set for Black Friday launch
Google is set to launch its tablet computer in time for the holiday season, according to published reports. The new product, created in conjunction with Verizon and hardware maker HTC, is expected to be a touch-screen device that will compete head-on with Apple's iPad and is likely to sell for less.
