  • Even Santa would choose to drive rather than fly commercial this holiday season

If Santa didn't have his own private sleigh to fly, he would probably choose to drive this holiday season. While Santa doesn't have to choose to drive, many more travelers are opting to load up the car and drive to their holiday destination, says the Car Care Council. "With airfares soaring, more people are realizing that the benefits of driving during the holiday season far outweigh the hassle of airline travel," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. "It is much less expensive to drive; you can control your arrival and departure, and you can fill your sleigh -- I mean trunk -- with as many bags as you want without getting charged." According to a story in USA Today, holiday air travelers can expect to spend about 8% more than last year flying to popular destinations, while some airline tickets could soar to as much as 27% higher than last year. Meanwhile, a family of four can travel 1,000 miles roundtrip by car for about the cost of one airline ticket. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the "Be Car Care Aware" consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers.   Business Strategies
  • Don't let your meetings get stuck in the bike shed
Too many high-level meetings fall prey to "bike-shedding" -- the notion that smart, powerful people will quickly sign off on important issues they barely understand but will spend hours arguing over trivial issues they think they understand, such as whether to build a bike shed. Avoid this trap by giving your team members the information they need to make big decisions and shielding them from the small ones, advises Dan McCarthy. "If you're the leader, exercise your decision making authority on the trivial stuff," he writes. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Leadership (11/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Cold calling is out; inbound marketing is in
Cold calling is often ineffective in the current sales climate, but inbound marketing is on the rise, writes Jason Gervais of WSI Milton. This technique "is about getting involved while your prospective customers are doing their research and becoming a resource in helping their decision making process," he writes.
