  • 76-year-old soda company launches craft beer line
    Illinois-based Excel Bottling, which was founded in 1936 and is known for distributing Ski soda in glass bottles, launched two craft beer flavors earlier this fall. The company invested $750,000 in equipment and updated bottling lines, which can fill 300 beer bottles per minute. Bill Meier, whose grandparents started the company, said Excel will look into partnerships with other craft breweries for bottling and distributing its beer.   • O-I to invest in growth and sustainability in European plants
    Owens-Illinois announced that it will invest €140 million in its European plants next year through upgrades to furnaces and glass-making machines at plants in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.     Researchers at Avery Office and Consumer Products, Kimberly-Clark and Kraft Foods demonstrated that simple packaging appeals to consumers who are missing a limb or who have only one hand free due to driving, carrying a child and other tasks through a study conducted by Kelley Styring of InsightFarm. Kimberly-Clark's pre-lathered handsoap allows consumers with only one hand available to skip a step when washing their hands, while Kraft offers products with SnapLid and Twist2Close innovations that make packaging easier to handle.   • Avery Dennison labels wash off cleanly with only water
    Avery Dennison introduced its Fasson Wash-off labels that can be used on the body or neck of glass bottles and other containers.     Sonoco Recycling has upgraded its Columbia, S.C., materials recovery facility so it can take in and process additional materials.   • N.Y. county is first to ban BPA-coated receipts
    The Suffolk County, N.Y., Legislature voted to impose a ban on receipts coated with bisphenol-A, which supporters believe to cause cancer, affect reproductive health and alter immune systems.
