- Apple puts bull's-eye on Galaxy S III
Apple will take aim at Samsung Electronics' flagship Galaxy S III phone and other devices in an amended patent infringement lawsuit the company initially filed in February, according to a federal court filing on Friday. The recent Apple victory against Samsung involved older smartphones. In the aftermath of that legal defeat, Samsung has moved to reassess its corporate culture, published reports say. "The ruling makes us reconsider the brand value of Samsung because it depicts Samsung as a copycat," said Seoul-based analyst James Song of KDB Daewoo Securities. - Amazon reportedly will cut tablet prices with ad-based model
Amazon is expected to take aim at the budget end of the tablet market with an advertiser-supported version of its Kindle Fire line that it will unveil Thursday, probably at a lower cost than its rivals, according to The Wall Street Journal. Sony, however, wants no part of a price war and will price the Xperia device that it will launch Friday at $399 for 16 gigabytes. Hewlett-Packard and Dell said at an industry event last week that they would return to the tablet market with Windows 8 models, but they offered no indication on pricing. Yahoo!/Reuters

- EU lobbies telecoms to enter spectrum-sharing deals
The European Union wants telecoms to help squeeze more wireless and broadband spectrum out of increasingly scarce resources by sharing their bandwidth. "What we see with spectrum right now is it's broken up in incredibly tiny parts spread across 27 different member states. That is obviously not the best way to exploit the resource," the European Commission's Ryan Heath said at a briefing. Reuters

- Quantum chip will make mobile phones more secure, researchers say
Researchers at the University of Bristol in the U.K. say they have come up with a silicon-based quantum chip, setting the stage for optical computers and mobile handsets that will be more secure than current models. "It really means we are getting to the point where we can start to think about not just the mass manufacture of devices, but getting to the scale where they might fit into mobile phones," said Mark Thompson of the university's School of Physics. - Hardware companies back Android but weigh alternatives
Smaller smartphone-makers who back Android have said they have no intention of abandoning the platform after Apple's patent victory over Samsung Electronics in federal court. Huawei, Sony, Lenovo and ZTE said they would stick with Google's platform, yet privately, some of them may be hedging their bets by considering other options, such as Windows 8. Reuters
