- FDA OKs human trial of stem cell therapy for heart attack
Cedars-Sinai researchers in Los Angeles received FDA approval to conduct human clinical trials of a stem cell therapy designed to repair damage caused by heart attack. A $5.5 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine helped fund development of the therapy, which is the first from a CIRM-supported disease team to be approved by the FDA for clinical trials. - H1N1 flu vaccine is safe for pregnant women, newborns
Danish researchers assessed more than 53,000 pregnancies and found that receiving the H1N1 flu vaccine during pregnancy did not raise the risk of birth defects or pregnancy complications. The study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. WebMD

- Some athletes turn to anti-inflammatory blood therapy
Dr. Peter Wehling of Düsseldorf, Germany, is treating athletes' joint and back problems with a blood therapy called Regenokine. The treatment is similar to platelet-rich plasma therapy, but the patients' blood is heated before being spun to boost the concentration of anti-inflammatory proteins instead of platelets, Wehling said. Independent trials are needed to show whether the therapy is effective, according to a professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Pittsburgh. The New York Times (tiered subscription model)

- Tenn. hospitals use hand hygiene, checklist to reduce infections
Tennessee hospitals improved hand hygiene protocols and followed a simple checklist to reduce bloodstream infection rates, which now are 30% better than a national benchmark, a state report said. The Tennessee Hospital Association worked with Dr. Peter Pronovost of Johns Hopkins University to establish a program that also included wearing sterile protective clothing and creating protocols for catheter placement and removal.
