  • Bode: Wind champions do well in elections
The re-election of champions of wind in both parties will help push Congress to extend the wind-energy Production Tax Credit, said Denise Bode, CEO of the American Wind Energy Association. President Barack Obama, who favors the PTC, won swing states with wind farms and factories, and Republican support helps remove uncertainty regarding the extension, Bode said. "There's strong bipartisan support for wind, and we look forward to immediate action." Bloomberg (11/7) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Broadwind Energy posts 26% increase in wind tower sales in Q3
Sales of Broadwind Energy's wind towers increased 26% to $37.4 million in the third quarter but the firm may experience a decline in sales in the fourth quarter, the company said. As the country's wind power capacity is expected to increase to over 60,000 megawatts by year's end, based on a report from the American Wind Energy Association, developers pursue various ways to handle the sector's overcapacity. "We are not looking at a material slowdown in our tower facility in the first half of next year," Broadwind's Stephanie Kushner said. • Vestas to lay off thousands worldwide after net loss increase
Vestas Wind Systems may lay off thousands of workers in 2013 as the firm could lose up to $637.1 million this year, the company said. The company's net loss in the third quarter rose to $222.9 million from $76.4 million in the same period last year because of increased costs and decline in development projects and other assets around the world, the firm said. However, one Vestas executive was upbeat about the re-election of President Barack Obama. "The good thing is that we have a president ... that will hopefully support the U.S. market as he did before," said Dag Andresen, Vestas' chief financial officer. • Dutch onshore wind farm gets 2 offshore wind turbines
Germany's RWE Innogy and utility Essent have installed two REpower 6.15-megawatt offshore wind turbines at the land-based wind farm that supplies power to the city of Eemshaven, the Netherlands. The turbines will increase the Westereems wind farm's capacity to 168 MW. The deployment of the model on land will give RWE more insight into its performance before using it in offshore projects, the company said. • Opinion: Obama win may not be enough to restart wind in 2013
President Barack Obama's re-election has increased the chances of the wind-energy Production Tax Credit getting an extension beyond this year, but divisions in Congress could doom PTC renewal, writes Herman Trabish. Observers agree that even if Congress extends the PTC in the lame-duck session, U.S. manufacturing and development will take a hit, Trabish notes. "It will take twelve months to twenty-four months to get the industry geared up and producing again," Trabish writes. Greentech Media (11/7) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Kennedy who endorsed Cape Wind wins congressional seat
Joseph Kennedy III, who recently endorsed the Cape Wind offshore wind project, going against members of his family, won in his election bid to replace retiring Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass. "The Cape Wind project would double the amount of alternative energy produced in Massachusetts and create good-paying jobs," Kennedy said. "Offshore wind is one of the resources Massachusetts is blessed with." Greentech Media (11/7) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Election shows "overwhelming" support for wind power, AWEA says
The re-election of wind-power supporters Rep. Dave Reichert, R-Wash.; Steve King, R-Iowa; Tom Latham, R-Iowa and Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., are a good sign for an extension of the wind-energy Production Tax Credit, said Denise Bode, CEO of the American Wind Energy Association. "We saw in the election results that Americans overwhelmingly approve of wind energy, and they vote for politicians who support it," Bode said.
