- U.S. and UK must invest in aerospace, Blakey says
The U.S. and U.K. must uphold their "special relationship" and keep investing in aerospace in order to serve their proper roles in the world, said Marion Blakey, president and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association. Blakey spoke to the Royal Aeronautical Society before the start of the Farnborough International Airshow. The "English-speaking democracies" of England and the U.S. must serve as "defenders of Western values," said Blakey, warning that both nations' aging aerospace systems and equipment need investment. - Uncertainty is stalling hiring and investment, AIA chairman says
Defense-cut uncertainty means layoff notices are looming at aerospace and defense firms and investment is on hold, say industry leaders. "No one wants to hire. No one feels there's enough certainty to make significant capital investments," said Dave Hess, president of United Technologies' Pratt & Whitney engine-making unit and chairman of the Aerospace Industries Association. "We're all kind of waiting on the sidelines to see what happens." Reuters

- Pentagon moves forward with biorefinery initiative
The Department of Defense is moving forward with an initiative to support the development of three biorefineries that will produce biofuels for military jets and ships, despite lawmakers' criticism of the price the U.S. Navy paid for biofuels to demonstrate a carrier strike group. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus said that biofuels enhance national security by lessening the country's reliance on foreign oil. The Pentagon's biorefinery initiative is "going to help support the creation and commercial viability of a defense-critical industry, and that's in domestic biofuels," Mabus said. Reuters
