- Design, engineering work gets go-ahead for $1.8B airport rebuild
Design and engineering work can begin on the proposed $1.8 billion rebuild of Salt Lake City International Airport now that the City Council has approved a resolution to reimburse the airport for its capital expenses. The redevelopment project aims to improve the airport's seismic safety and accommodate passenger growth in the coming years. - $1B plan for Calif. army base could create more than 2,000 jobs
A $1 billion project that would develop a former army base in Oakland, Calif., has received the OK from the City Council. The project would develop about 130 acres of the former army base into a logistics and warehousing center. Work would include infrastructure upgrades, building a deep-water port and enhancing rail capacity to handle cargo from the adjacent Port of Oakland. The Oakland Tribune (Calif.)

- $390M Caldecott fourth bore project features high-tech escape routes
Seven cross passages are being built between the third and fourth bores of San Francisco's $390 million Caldecott Tunnel to facilitate escape in the event of an emergency. Doors to the passages will be electronically operated. "We’re in the process of building a state-of-the-art facility with very sophisticated monitoring systems," said project spokeswoman Ivy Morrison. - House, Senate leaders' involvement signals hope for transportation bill
The involvement of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has "sparked new life" in the conference committee's discussions about a surface transportation bill, according to The Hill. "Apparently we’re finally getting down to the point of serious negotiations," said Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore. However, if talks stall again, numerous projects across the U.S. will be affected, among them the $2 billion upgrade of Florida's Interstate 4 and Pennsylvania's Route 219 south project.
