GLP-1 drugs raise pancreatitis risk in type 2 diabetes
Type 2 diabetes patients who took glucagon-like peptide-1-based drugs such as sitagliptin and exenatide had a twofold increased risk of hospitalization for acute pancreatitis within 60 days of starting treatment compared with those who took other diabetes medications, according to a study in JAMA Internal Medicine. Teplizumab curbs beta-cell death in new-onset type 1 diabetes
Patients with new-onset type 1 diabetes had higher rates of beta-cell death compared with those who had long-standing diabetes and those without diabetes, a study found. However, teplizumab treatment was associated with lower beta-cell death and better beta-cell function in patients with new-onset diabetes, researchers wrote in the journal Diabetes. Survey: Parental views don't mesh with U.S. statistics on kids' weight
Fifteen percent of U.S. parents said their children were a little or very overweight, according to a survey by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Harvard School of Public Health and National Public Radio, even though 32% of U.S. children are classified as overweight or obese. Study links avocado intake to lower BMI, smaller waist size
Data on more than 17,500 U.S. adults show that those who reported consuming avocados had lower body weight, BMI and waist circumference and were as much as 50% less likely to develop metabolic syndrome than were those who did not eat the fruit. Doctors skeptical of value-based payment, ACO execs say
Physicians have shown some reluctance to move from fee-for-service to value-based care payments, making it difficult for accountable care organizations to be fully implemented, ACO leaders say. Many executives expressed similar sentiments, but they said the shift must be made. "We believe the time to adopt value-based care transformation is now — most importantly, because it is the right thing to do, but additionally, because it is the smart thing to do financially," said Dr. Hal Teitelbaum, CEO of Crystal Run Healthcare in Middletown, N.Y. Study evaluates patient-centered care delivery among doctors
A survey by WiserTogether finds that physicians could do better at delivering patient-centered care. Doctors received a score of 3.46 out of 5 as measured by the Patient-Centered Care Index. Doctors scored best on their efforts to involve patients in decisions and scored lowest for their efforts to understand patients' lives and values before making recommendations and to help those in their care understand their options. Without funding, panel to address provider shortage can't convene
