  • Xylem executive sees growing demand for bag-in-box
    In response to the growing demand for bag-in-box systems from producers of teas, juices and other non-carbonated drinks, beverage dispensing company Xylem is working on a new range of electric beverage pumps, the company's Peter Wright said.   • Big Red buys HyDrive Energy
    Texas-based Big Red announced it has purchased HyDrive Energy, the New York maker of low-calorie energy drinks and a zero-calorie drink mix. "We’ve always kept a close eye on enhanced waters and feel like a lighter, lower-calorie energy water or enhanced water plays a better play," said Gary Smith, CEO of Big Red, which he called a "total portfolio beverage company." Smith said while the acquisition is "a seat at the table for healthy drinks and healthy energy," it does not mean the company is moving away from carbonated soft drinks.     Jamba Juice said it will open 120 California stores in the next six or seven years.   • Researchers look at caffeine's role in diabetes risk
    People who drank either caffeinated or decaffeinated sugary beverages were more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than were those who did not, a study found. However, researchers said participants who drank decaf or regular coffee had a slightly lower risk of diabetes onset than did nondrinkers.     Gatorade spokeswoman Katie Montiel said a study showing bananas are as effective as Gatorade in promoting athletic performance should not be considered the last word on the subject.
