- School nutrition professionals work to prevent waste
School nutrition professionals in Florida say new federal standards for school meals requiring students to load their trays with fruits, vegetables and other nutritious food have led to more waste in the cafeteria. Now, they say, they are working to prevent students from throwing away food and healthy beverages by monitoring trash cans, conducting student surveys and maintaining school gardens, because many produce items are unfamiliar to children who may be used to seeing canned foods. - Calif. schools are allowed to sell produce from gardens
Schools in California will be able to sell produce from on-campus gardens and invest that money back into garden programs under a bill signed recently by Gov. Jerry Brown. The lawmaker who authored the bill, Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla, D-Concord, said legislation will help to protect school gardens -- which aim to reduce childhood obesity and give students increased access to fresh produce -- from budget cuts.
