  • Vt. lawmakers consider move to make reduced-price lunches free
Lawmakers in Vermont are considering legislation that would make it the first state to provide free meals for students who qualify for reduced-price meals. School nutrition professionals and advocates have backed the legislation, along with many lawmakers, who say the $300,000 price tag will be made up for with better academic performance and other benefits. Doug Davis, president of the School Nutrition Association of Vermont, said the change also will help remove stigma around subsidized school meals. • More students eat breakfast under universal program
Officials in a Tennessee school district say a new free breakfast program that will last through the end of the school year has nearly doubled in the number of elementary-school students eating breakfast at school. The free, universal breakfast program also is being piloted for 60 days at one middle school and two elementary schools. Lisa Holt, nutrition manager for the county system, said school breakfast programs have been shown to improve students' test scores and keep them healthier. Kingsport Times-News (Tenn.) • Study: Children who spend more time at dinner table weigh less
Children who eat with their families for at least 20 minutes four times a week have lower body weight than those who stay at the table for only 15 to 17 minutes, according to a study in Economics and Human Biology. The results suggest communication and scheduled meal times play key roles in children's weight, researchers said. MedicalDaily.com (1/22) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Clearer nutrition facts on food may lead to healthier choices
Participants had a better understanding of a food product's healthfulness when the nutritional facts, such as calories and nutrients, were presented for the entire package, rather than just a single serving, an FDA study revealed. The findings in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics suggest that clearly displaying the total number of calories and nutrients in the entire container may help boost healthy eating habits, researchers said. • Fla. district to cut off credit for hot school meals
Officials in a Florida school district have set strict limits on the number of times students can charge a hot meal without paying. Elementary-school students can charge two hot meals, while middle- and high-school students can charge one. If students meet their limits without paying, they will be served a cold meal. Officials say the move was necessary because students' unpaid meal debt reached $75,000. News-Leader (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) (1/23) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
