  • Report calls for better supervision of EHR incentive initiative
    The HHS Office of Inspector General has released a report urging the ONC and CMS to improve oversight of Medicare's incentive payment initiative for EHR adoption. The report, which focused on the program's early stages, is based on interviews with CMS staff, internal documents related to the initiative and reviews of attestation materials. Steps such as implementing prepayment verification would improve CMS' governance of the $6.6 billion in payments expected under the program, the OIG said.     A report from the ONC found that 48% of physicians in the U.S. were e-prescribing using EHR systems as of June 2012, compared with 7% in December 2008.   • Smartphone-based care may help boost diabetes outcomes
    Patients who received mobile-based diabetes care, including a wireless glucometer and a smartphone containing a personalized care plan, showed lower A1C levels at six months compared with those who had usual care, an analysis indicated. Researchers also found that patients on mobile-based care had better control of their bad cholesterol levels and were more likely to communicate online with their health care providers than those in the control group.
