- Defense appropriations bill faces tight deadline
A defense spending bill is likely doomed if it's not passed this month, says House Armed Services Committee Vice Chairman Rep. Mac Thornberry, R-Texas. If Congress doesn't approve the appropriations bill in what Thornberry called a "limited window," the military will have to function under a continuing resolution, which some military officials have said is not their preferred approach to funding. - Defense "downturn" prompts BAE to cut 200 jobs
Nearly 200 BAE Systems workers in southern New Hampshire will be laid off as the company retrenches in the face of an industry slowdown. The layoffs are part of a 300-job reduction that the defense giant is making worldwide and could be just the beginning of cutbacks, a BAE official says. While future cuts could come as a result of sequestration, the New Hampshire job losses are due to what an official called "the downturn of defense." The Union Leader (Manchester, N.H.)

- Calif. recovery is threatened by sequester
California's economic recovery is likely to be hampered by sequestration cuts, experts say. Some $3.2 billion of the $9 billion in California's share of sequestration cuts will come from the state's military industry. California has "had housing-market and job-market gains beginning to solidify," said Jason Sisney of the nonpartisan California Legislative Analyst's Office. "And just as that's happening, we have the federal government taking actions that could impede that recovery." The New York Times (tiered subscription model)

- Honeywell predicts growth in demand for helicopters
Honeywell predicts worldwide demand for civilian-use helicopters will rise over the next five years. "Supporting the growth numbers is the fact that helicopter usage for corporate, oil and gas, utility and training missions is improving, which shows that helicopters are value-add aircraft in today's business environment," said Brian Sill, vice president of Honeywell aftermarket helicopter sales. Urgent call to action – write Congress and the White House to repeal sequestration
Because of the White House's and Congress' inability to reach a deal to reverse sequestration, the initial round of multibillion cuts to defense and non-defense federal agencies has begun. Although these cuts are now being implemented, it is not too late to repeal this bad policy and develop a balanced, bi-partisan solution to our nation's debt and deficit problem. Now is the time to reach out to your elected officials to communicate the urgent need to repeal sequestration. Go to the Second to None website to send a letter to your elected officials in Washington today.
