  • Column: Lodging Conference opens on a high note
Attendees of last week's Lodging Conference in Phoenix were brimming with optimism for 2014 as signs point to stronger hotel performance in the coming years, writes Glenn Haussman, editor-in-chief of Hotel Interactive. "[H]otel stocks are up 12% on average this year alone, the travel business is driving the reduction in unemployment and soaring demand and higher rooms rates are driving profits. In the 12 months trailing in July, STR says the industry brought in $120 billion in revenue, a record high," Haussman writes. Hotel Interactive (9/18) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Hotel leaders advise caution amid cheerful outlook on industry
Attendees of The Lodging Conference last week in Phoenix were largely optimistic amid encouraging economic and performance forecasts. However, some hotel leaders urged restraint, especially in the supply pipeline. "We must be mindful to plan for whatever will come," said David Kong, CEO of Best Western International. "Supply is coming and the industry in the U.S. may be past its peak. The strategy must be how to grow your share of the pie because the pie is not growing." • Hotel fundamentals are not all rosy, data experts say
Data experts at The Lodging Conference said hotel performance has improved, with average daily rate in August reaching a 12-month moving average of $109.20 -- a new peak. However, some numbers are less encouraging, such as the weak 2.4% rise in U.S. hotel demand in July on a 12-month moving average. Hotel demand also has been declining in Brazil, Russia, India and China since 2010, which could pose problems for hotel firms that have developed heavily in these countries. • Lodging Conference sees more confident hotel executives
Hoteliers who attended The Lodging Conference in Phoenix last week were generally optimistic, though some advised caution in light of ongoing changes in the market. "We're generally more optimistic this year than last, except that we're trying to gauge the impact of a potential interest rate increase. So we are making sure we're making good buys with good yield to protect us," said David Capps, Aimbridge Hospitality's vice president of development. • Hoteliers report strong transactions landscape in lodging sector
Hotel executives who attended The Lodging Conference in Phoenix last week said the hotels transactions market offers plentiful opportunities amid a diverse group of buyers, strong performance metrics and an attractive pricing environment. "We have a healthy balance now and [buyers] have a healthy tension with sellers. For owners there is potential to cash out and take chips off the table. The other option is to hold because revenue per available room forecast is strong," said Ashford Hospitality Trust President Douglas Kessler.
