- Northeast courses react to aftermath of Hurricane Sandy
Private clubs in the Northeast are attempting to return to normal after Hurricane Sandy caused costly destruction and even took the life of one New York club owner. While golf courses in North Carolina are already up and running, courses in New York and New Jersey, including about 25 owned and operated by Billy Casper Golf, are following tactical plans to recuperate. “When the Hurricane Preparedness Plan was given to me, I was kind of shocked...Well, now we’ve experienced two of them in the last two years.” said Dan Guinle, general manager of Royce Brook Golf Club in Hillsborough, N.J. - Consumers want more seafood on children's menus
Kids and parents alike want to see more healthy, fresh seafood options on children's menus such as broiled fish, sushi and coconut shrimp, according to the 2012 Kids and Parents Discovery Survey. “Kids a lot of times are very aspirational -- they want to eat like their parents,” said restaurateur Aaron Noveshen, who noted that his restaurants sell California rolls to 2-year-olds. “That’s kids' food now. It does quite well.” Nation's Restaurant News (free registration)

- Predicting golf's future requires look at its past
The U.S. golf industry has gone through painful challenges in the past during economy-shaking events such as the Great Depression and the 1970s fuel crisis, but after every decline courses almost always saw an uptick in business as the economy bounced back, writer and former golf course owner Steve Eubanks writes. Although those rebounds often took decades, it's safe to say golf course owners and managers can be cautiously optimistic in the years ahead if they keep their belts tight and participate in initiatives designed to lure younger players, he writes. - 10 small annoyances that deter guests from repeat visits
Hotels are often quick to change in response to consumer needs such as updating rooms, adding grab-and-go eating options and offering free gourmet coffee, but the little things that get overlooked can often guarantee a guest won't return, writes Pharos Hospitality president Adam Zembruski. Managers should make sure guests never have to wait in line, honor late check-out requests and catch billing errors ahead of time to avoid sending a guest to the competition, he writes. - Restaurants may face hiring challenges this holiday season
Restaurant managers will have a hard time filling their holiday positions with top-tier workers due to current unemployment rates, according to the People Report Workforce Index. “From a perspective of trying to staff a restaurant and obtain the highest tier of talent, it is getting harder. If there was any lingering doubt, this shows the situation from three years ago is gone,” said Michael Harms, a senior business analyst for the People Report.
