  • Alliance exec: Propane autogas is more economical than CNG
Propane autogas is a more viable and economical alternative fuel for Mississippi fleets than compressed natural gas, writes Stuart Weidie, president of Alliance AutoGas and president and CEO of Blossman Gas. Weidie notes that transitioning fleets to propane autogas is cheaper than converting to CNG, and building autogas fueling stations is more economical than building CNG stations. "Despite the fact that special interests are aggressively promoting natural gas with lobbying teams and advertising campaigns, fleets across the country are deploying thousands of autogas vehicles each year," Weidie writes. • Demand from China, developing countries will help petchem industry
Petrochemicals demand from China, South America and other developing countries will keep the petrochemicals industry afloat despite the weak global economy, industry experts said Wednesday during the World Petrochemical Conference in Houston. "We expect that the industry will continue to experience weak margins during most of this year, but will come out of the trough toward the end of the year," said IHS Senior Director Paul Pang. Upcoming petrochemical projects in China and South America will buoy the industry, especially as discoveries of liquids-rich shale plays provide new sources for feedstock. • Propane autogas a "logical bridge" toward future without fossil fuels
Propane autogas' many advantages compared with other alternative fuels indicate that the fuel "would be a logical bridge" in transitioning away from fossil fuels, writes Joe Harrop, a retired educator in Red Bluff, Calif. Experts believe that the country's supply of propane could last for at least 200 years, and building the necessary infrastructure to distribute the fuel "would be relatively safer and less expensive than for other fuels such as natural gas or hydrogen," he adds. • U.S. economy is benefiting from shift to shale gas, expert says
Shale-derived natural gas is driving an "economic revolution" for the U.S., writes Fareed Zakaria. The benefits extend to the U.S. manufacturing sector, where chemical firms are realizing cost advantages from domestic production. "The rise of shale gas is shaping up to be the biggest shift in energy in generations. And its consequences -- economic and political -- are profoundly beneficial to the United States," Zakaria writes. The Washington Post (3/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • 3 questions to help leaders prepare for the worst
Managers can prepare for unknown dangers by imagining the worst, devising a response plan and asking whether their team is up to the challenge, John Baldoni writes. "Very often members of a leadership team are equipped to manage when the going is good, but what happens when the bad gets into fear?" Baldoni writes. "... You need leaders who can cope with [setbacks] and maintain the discipline to persevere." CBS MoneyWatch (3/26) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
  • Develop leadership presence by striving to inspire
Leadership presence is hard to define but an increasingly valuable quality to possess, Kristi Hedges writes. It's neither natural charisma nor a set of public-speaking tricks but exuding a sense of authenticity, honesty and instilling confidence all around. Focus on your intent, using natural body language and imagining your audience's reaction in advance, Hedges writes. SmartBrief/SmartBlog on Leadership (3/29) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story

  • Trucks, Vans, Shuttles: New Guide Available

A new brochure covering propane autogas vehicles -- Guide to Trucks, Vans, and Shuttles Fueled by Propane Autogas -- lists five reasons why fleet owners are choosing these vehicles: they cost less to operate; the fuel is domestically produced; the vehicles release fewer pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions; they provide the same power, torque, and towing capacity as gasoline-powered vehicles; and fleet owners can choose from more than a dozen new on-road vehicle platforms fueled by propane autogas, many developed with funding from PERC. Light- and medium-duty truck, van, and shuttle options are ready to fit almost any application. The brochure from the Propane Education & Research Council can be viewed or downloaded.
