- T-Mobile goes all in for prepaid; eyes iPhone, end of subsidies
T-Mobile USA will today begin selling its $70 unlimited data plan on a contract-free basis after CEO John Legere on Tuesday fiercely defended the strength of the prepaid business. "This theory that the prepaid market is dying is wrong," he said at an analysts' conference, adding that the carrier will also begin to sell the iPhone within three to four months. Legere said the prepaid plan was designed to take subscribers from his larger rivals. Dell and Hewlett-Packard are partnering with T-Mobile to provide 200 megabytes of wireless service free with a laptop purchase. T-Mobile also said that it will speed up its plans to deliver nationwide Long-Term Evolution service. Total Telecom Magazine (U.K.)/Dow Jones Newswires

- DISH offers $3.30 a share for Clearwire, outbidding Sprint
DISH Network bid $2.28 billion for Clearwire, topping Sprint Nextel's $2.20 billion offer as the satellite provider continues its aggressive efforts to enter the wireless business. Clearwire plans to evaluate the offer and withhold from drawing on Sprint's financing offer. Analysts scratched their heads over DISH's intent. "It’s hard for me to imagine that what DISH wants is Clearwire. It could be a chess move to get a partnership with Sprint," said analyst Craig Moffett of Sanford C. Bernstein, adding that DISH might believe purchasing Clearwire is its best path to entering the wireless business. DISH offered $3.30 a share versus Sprint's $2.97 bid. Bloomberg Businessweek

- Apple said to prep cheaper iPhone to regain market share
Apple is reportedly developing an iPhone that would cost consumers less, possibly to launch this year, according to a published report that suggests the handset would use cheaper parts in its shell -- perhaps polycarbonate plastic instead of aluminum -- but would resemble the regularly priced model. The plan is a tentative one, the report stresses, noting that the iPhone's global share of smartphone sales has waned in recent quarters. The Wall Street Journal

- Sony seeks greater smartphone share without acquisitions
Sony chief executive Kazuo Hirai said the company could establish itself as a strong player in the global smartphone market without making acquisitions. In an interview, Hirai set an ambitious path for Sony Mobile, which holds a reported 5% market share behind Samsung Electronics and Apple -- Sony is moving up in rank primarily due to Nokia's decline. "The ingredients are there for us to garner the kind of market share that I think we deserve," he said. Analysts see the cellphone segment is seen as a key element of the parent company's turnaround strategy. The Wall Street Journal

- Is your refrigerator running -- on Android?
Google wants to introduce its Android software into appliances such as refrigerators and other gadgets as a way of exploiting the new era of connected devices. Manufacturers this week displayed a number of Android-based products, from car stereo systems to pocket projectors to rice cookers. “The fundamental advantage with Android is that the vendor can take a bigger chunk of the software and own it," said Al Hilwa, an IDC analyst. - LTE network almost complete -- Verizon talks live TV, other services
Verizon Wireless is six months ahead of schedule in competing its Long-Term Evolution network, said Lowell McAdam, CEO of parent company Verizon Communications, noting the carrier's network should be completed by mid-year. In a speech at 2013 International CES, McAdam said Verizon wants to air the 2014 Super Bowl over its LTE network, part of a plan to expand into broadcasting live TV and leveraging LTE into other services. "Our goal is to break down the barriers between home and mobile once and for all,” he said. Verizon also said in a filing that it activated 9.8 million smartphones in the fourth quarter, many of them iPhones, but said that it would report lower cash flow than a year ago. Multichannel News
