- Pet food pantry helps animals in need
Pam Tracy founded the Fort Wayne Pet Food Pantry in Indiana to help people keep their pets while struggling in a down economy. "I see patterns of people coming back after they stop coming for a while. They'll get a job, lose the job and then come back for more," she said. "I'm glad we’re there for them." - Emergencies associated with diabetes in pets
Pets with diabetes can be managed long-term in most cases, writes veterinarian Laura Higgins, but even with proper care, some can suffer emergencies including hypoglycemic crisis, hyperglycemic hyperosmolar syndrome and diabetic ketoacidosis. - Class teaches first aid for pets
A two-and-a-half-hour class at the South County Recreation Center in Harwood, Md., teaches first aid for cats and dogs, including treatments for broken bones, heart failure and choking. "It's not long-term care in a situation -- just enough so that you can get to the vet," said instructor Laurie K. Scible. "And keep in mind that they don't have 911 to call for pets.
