- IHS iSuppli: A Micron-Elpida merger would step up DRAM competition
A merger between Elpida Memory and Micron Technology would create a stronger competitor to Samsung Electronics in the DRAM market, IHS iSuppli notes, making a new No. 2 and pushing Hynix Semiconductor down to third place. Elpida faces an April deadline of repaying about $1.5 billion in government and bank loans, raising questions of potential insolvency for the DRAM maker. EE Times

- Nvidia to push phone designs competing with the iPhone 4S
Nvidia says its dual-core Tegra 2 processor can be combined with a 3G modem to make a smartphone comparable to the iPhone 4S, for about one-fifth of the price of Apple's latest phone in China. Meanwhile, the company exceeded the expectations of financial analysts with the results of its fiscal fourth quarter but forecast that revenues in the current quarter would be down slightly, due to the limited availability of 28-nanometer chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and the lingering shortage of hard-disk drives.
