  • Clear Channel breaks new ground with royalty pact with Big Machine
Clear Channel has struck a groundbreaking royalty deal with Big Machine Label Group that calls for artists to be paid when songs are played on broadcast and digital outlets. Under the deal, Clear Channel will make payments to the label, instead of using industry middleman SoundExchange; the label will share the royalties equally with the artists. Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman said he backed the arrangement because it looks at radio "holistically" by determining royalties based on a percentage of ad revenue connected to a song's airplay. "I can't build a business space based on paying money for every time I play a song, but I can build a business by saying I will give a percentage of revenue that I bring in. What we are really trying to do is come up with a predictable model," Pittman said. Billboard.biz (6/5) LinkedInFacebookTwitterEmail this Story
